What changed on July 1, 2026

The new Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) introduces payments of 1–10% of income, a $10 minimum, and forgiveness after 30 years. If you’re on SAVE or PAYE today, your payment, and your best strategy, may change. Most borrowers don’t know their new number yet.

Your numbers, made clear

See what a refinance could really do.

For private loans, model a new rate and term against your current loan, and watch the lifetime difference. Estimates only; your actual rate depends on the lender.

Have federal loans? Most borrowers should not refinance them.

Refinancing turns a federal loan into a private one, for good. You give up income-driven plans like RAP and IBR, Public Service Loan Forgiveness, forgiveness at the end of a plan, and federal options for hard years like deferment and forbearance. Lenders advertise the lower rate; they don’t price what you give up. Run your federal options first. This calculator is for loans that are already private. Read why, with the numbers

Computed, not generated

Why not just ask ChatGPT?

You can, and millions of borrowers do. Just know the difference between a generated answer and a computed one.

Chatbots generate

AI predicts a plausible answer from training data. It can describe plans that no longer exist and quote last year’s numbers with total confidence, and its own terms of use say not to rely on it for professional advice.

We compute

Your numbers here come from the published federal formulas, current with the July 1, 2026 rules. Same inputs, same answer, every time. Nothing is generated, so everything can be checked.

A human stands behind it

A chatbot is not licensed and owes you nothing. The advisors in our directory specialize in student loans and are accountable for the plan they build with you.

Or bring the engine to your chatbot

Ask Claude or ChatGPT, with Finology inside.

Add Finology Software to the assistant you already use. Your questions get computed answers from the same verified engine advisors use, not generated ones.

3

Ask 5 questions

Each new calculation uses one of your 5 free questions. There is no daily limit.

Make your 5 questions count

A few minutes of prep turns 5 questions into a full picture.

  • Have your numbers ready: total federal balance and average interest rate (on studentaid.gov), your AGI from your last tax return, your filing status and household size, and your spouse’s income if you’re married.
  • Put everything in one question. A question with an input missing can spend a turn just asking for it.
  • Start wide. One comparison question returns every plan you can actually elect, with the payment, the total cost, what’s forgiven and the tax at forgiveness.
  • Married? Spend your second on filing status. Filing jointly or separately can change your payment by hundreds of dollars a month.
  • Follow-ups about an answer you already have are usually free. Asking what forgiveness means or why a plan is excluded doesn’t run a new calculation; only a new calculation counts.

Copy one to start (in ChatGPT, begin with @Finology Software):

Compare every federal repayment plan for me: $64,000 in Direct loans at 6.2%, AGI $58,000, single, household of 1.
I’m married. My spouse earns $71,000 and has no student loans. Should we file jointly or separately for my loans?
What would RAP cost me with a household of 4 and an AGI of $95,000?

What comes next

You have your answer. Here’s how to keep it current.

On your own

Rerun your comparison when you recertify your income each year, or when your income, family or filing status changes. Keep your numbers handy and it takes one question.

With an advisor

If you’d rather have someone track it with you year to year, a student loan advisor in our directory can keep your plan on Finology Software and recheck it for you.
