OBBB-compliant, Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) is live in the simulator

The VIN Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit doing genuinely good work. Its free Student Debt Center tools, including the Student Loan Repayment Simulator and My Student Loans, are current, careful, and built to help veterinary borrowers understand their options. A borrower who wants to self-serve should use them. This page is about a narrower question.

Plenty of advisors quietly run client numbers through free borrower tools, and it works, once. The problems start when a free consumer site becomes the operating system for a professional book: whose account holds the client’s data, where is the record of what you recommended, and what happens when dozens of clients hit recertification on dozens of different dates?

The free tools are good

Say it plainly: the math is maintained, the guidance is careful, and the price is right. Nothing on this page argues otherwise. If a client of yours wants to explore their own numbers between meetings, the VIN Foundation’s tools are a fine place for them to do it, on their own behalf.

Why client data does not belong in a free consumer site

The moment you enter a client’s loan history into a third-party consumer site, you take on questions that site was never designed to answer for a professional: under what terms is the data held, who can access it, and how would you retrieve or remove it if the client asked? A consumer tool’s terms are written for an individual acting on their own behalf. Your obligations are written for a professional handling someone else’s financial data. Those are not the same thing, and your compliance review knows it.

There is also the record. When a client asks, three years from now, why you recommended the plan you did, a professional platform shows the versioned report and the exact data it was built from. A session on a free site shows nothing.

What a practice needs that a calculator cannot hold

A calculator answers a question. A practice manages a book: which clients recertify next month, whose qualifying-payment count just moved, which plans changed under the rules that took effect July 1, 2026. Finology Software imports each client’s NSLDS file, simulates plans under the current rules, verifies engine output against fixed reference scenarios before changes ship, tracks every deadline, and produces the report your client acts on.
