When your product shows a borrower their student loan payment, it is giving them one of the biggest numbers in their financial life. A trustworthy answer earns their confidence, and their confidence is what keeps them coming back to your product.
Trustworthy answers have six things in common. Here is a real one from the Finology engine, for a married borrower in Texas filing separately, earning $45,000, with a spouse earning $150,000 and two dependents:
| Plan | Monthly payment | Total paid | Forgiven | Est. tax at forgiveness | Total cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard (10-year) | $1,363 | $163,509 | $0 | $0 | $163,509 |
| RAP | $631 | $227,250 | $100,160 (year 30) | $23,874 | $251,124 |
| IBR (10%) | $471 | $113,040 | $162,960 (year 20) | $43,768 | $156,808 |
| PAYE | $471 | $113,040 | $162,960 (year 20) | $43,768 | $156,808 |
Each of the six is visible in that answer.
1. It explains itself
A great answer shows how it got there: the income it used, the household it assumed, and the rule that applied. Users trust what they can follow.
This is where the details matter. In a community-property state, a married borrower filing separately pays on half of the couple’s combined income, not their own. Here that is $97,500, and a RAP payment of $631 a month. The answer says so in plain words, so the user sees a number that makes sense instead of one that looks off.
2. It offers the right choices
Every borrower has their own menu of repayment plans, based on their loans and their dates (how loan dates set the menu). A trustworthy answer shows exactly the plans that borrower can choose, and says why any plan is missing. Above, the tiered Standard plan is left out because it applies only to loans made on or after July 1, 2026.
3. It starts from the real loans
The borrower’s federal loan file holds everything that matters: balances, loan types, dates and years of payment history. An answer built from that file reflects the borrower’s actual situation, down to the months already counted toward forgiveness.
4. It shows the whole picture
The best plan is not always the lowest payment. In the answer above, RAP has a lower payment than Standard, but IBR costs about $94,000 less than RAP over the life of the loan once the tax at forgiveness is counted (why forgiveness is taxed again). A trustworthy answer shows the monthly payment, the total cost, the amount forgiven and the estimated tax, side by side, so the user can choose with confidence.
5. It is checked, every day
Rules change, and real files are messy. Trustworthy answers come from an engine that is checked like this:
- Before every calculation release: against an independent set of reference scenarios with known answers, kept apart from the production engine, and replayed through the production code against real advisor files.
- Every night: the same replay runs against every client an advisor firm worked on that day.
- Twice a day: a live check compares what advisors see on screen with what the engine says.
- On every plan in every answer: a flag saying whether that plan’s math is covered by the reference scenarios.
6. It can be revisited
Months later, an advisor or a borrower may ask why they saw a certain number. A trustworthy answer can be looked up again, with the inputs and the rules that produced it. Every Finology answer carries an identifier and the rules version it used.
“A core component of our strategy is leveraging Finology Software to create mini-financial plans for clients and give them confidence they’re making the right choices with their federal student loan debt.”

| Can it start from the borrower’s federal loan file? | Yes: in the app and the connector, answers start from the uploaded file |
| Does it show total cost, forgiveness and the tax, not only the payment? | Yes: all of them, for every plan, side by side |
| How is it checked, and how often? | Reference scenarios and real-file replay before each release, nightly replay, a twice-daily live check |
| Can an answer be looked up again later? | Yes: an identifier and the rules version on every answer (GET /v1/verify/{answerId}) |
The answer Finology gives
Finology Software builds every answer this way, for advisors in our app, inside Claude, ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot, and for platforms through our API and MCP connector. There is no lighter version of the math on a cheaper plan: the free sandbox returns the same numbers as Platform.

Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if a student loan calculator is accurate?
Check that it shows the income it used, offers only the plans the borrower can elect and says why others are missing, starts from the real federal loan file, shows total cost, forgiveness and tax, is checked against independent reference scenarios and real files, and can be looked up again later.
Does a married borrower filing separately in a community-property state pay on their own income?
No. In a community-property state such as Texas or California, a borrower filing separately pays on half of the couple’s combined income. A borrower earning $45,000 with a spouse earning $150,000 pays on $97,500, which is $631 a month on RAP with two dependents.
How does Finology Software verify its student loan numbers?
Every calculation change is checked against an independent set of reference scenarios and replayed against real advisor files before release. The replay runs again every night, and a live check twice a day compares what advisors see with what the engine says.
What does the Finology Software engine cost?
A sandbox key is free for 25 calls a month for 30 days. Developer is $49 a month for 2,000 calls and Platform is $499 a month for 100,000 calls. Advisors pay $99 a month or $89 a month billed annually for the full app.
